automatic detection equipment that
is installed in the same areas as the
sprinklers. Foam-water systems are
designed to distribute a foam-water
solution to a speciﬁc hazard area for
ﬁre protection,

Systems can be used for discharge of
water ﬁrst, then foam for a speciﬁed
period, and then followed by water
until manually shut off, The type and
potential size of the hazard determines
the number of discharge devices, type
of foam concentrate, and foam-water
discharge rate and duration.

Examples: extraction plants, aircraft
hangars and areas where flammable-
liquid spill ﬁres may occur. Upon
exhaustion of the foam concentrate
supply, water discharge follows and
continues until shut off manually.

Characteristics of some flammable
products may require higher densities
and special foam liquid concentrates,
NFPA 11 contains requirements
for foam-water systems, with
requirements for foam systems also
found in NFPA 13, NFPA 16, NFPA 30,
NFPA 409, and NFPA 418.

GAS SUPPRESSION SYSTEMS

Gaseous ﬁre suppression is a term to describe the use of inert gases and chemical agents to extinguish a
ﬁre. Also called Clean Agent Fire Suppression. These Agents are governed by the National Fire Protection
Association (NFPA) Standard for Clean Agent Fire Extinguishing Systems – NFPA 2001 in the USA, with
different standards and regulations in other parts of the world. The system typically consists of the agent,

Novec 1230 fluid is a high molecular weight material, compared with the ﬁrst generation halocarbon clean agents.
The  product  has  a  heat  of  vaporization  of  88.1  kJ/kg  and  low  vapor  pressure.  Although  it  is  a  liquid  at  room
temperature it gasiﬁes immediately after being discharged in a total flooding system. The product is ideal for use
in  total  flooding  applications,  localized  flooding  systems,  directional  spray  type  applications  and  may  be  used
in  portable  extinguishers  for  specialized  applications.  But  in  addition  to  the  conventional  methods  of  super-
pressurization using nitrogen, Novec 1230 fluid also lends itself for use in pump applications because it is a liquid.

Systems working on a total flooding principle apply an extinguishing agent
to a three dimensional enclosed space in order to achieve a concentration
of the agent (volume percent of the agent in air) adequate to extinguish the
ﬁre. These types of systems may be operated automatically by detection and
related controls or manually by the operation of a system actuator.

Systems working on a local application principle apply an extinguishing
agent directly onto a ﬁre (usually a two dimensional area), or into the three
dimensional region immediately surrounding the substance or object on
ﬁre. The main difference in local application from total flooding design is the
absence of physical barriers enclosing the ﬁre space.

Component Description

The system is capable of automatic detection and actuation as well as remote manual actuation.
Additional equipment is available for building ﬁre alarm panel connections, electrical shutdown
and/or interface, and mechanical or electrical gas line
shut-off applications. The detection portion of the ﬁre suppression system allows for
automatic detection by means of speciﬁc temperature-rated alloy
type fusible links, which separate when the temperature exceeds the rating of the link, allowing
the regulated release to actuate. A system owner’s guide is available containing basic information
pertaining to system operation and maintenance. A detailed technical manual, including system
description, design, installation,

WET CHEMICAL AGENT
– The extinguishing agent is a mixture of
organic salts designed for rapid flame knockdown and foam
securement of grease related ﬁres. It is available in plastic containers with instructions for wet
chemical handling and usage.

The system also protects auxiliary grease extraction
equipment and cooking equipment such as fryers;
griddles and range tops; upright, natural charcoal,
or chain-type broilers; electric, lava rock, mesquite,
or gas-radiant char-broilers; and woks.

Is  an  active  ﬁre  protection  method,
consisting  of  a  water  supply  system,
providing  adequate  pressure  and
flowrate  to  a  water  distribution  piping
system,  onto  which  ﬁre  sprinklers  are
connected.

Preaction systems are dry pipe sprinkler
systems with pressurized air in their
pipes and closed sprinkler heads.

Water is converted into steam, which
cools, wets and moves oxygen away from
flames. The mist water droplets deplete
the oxygen on the flame front, which in
turn extinguishes the ﬁre.

Pressurized  water  resides  in  the  pipe
until a ﬁre is detected by a heat-sensitive
automatic  sprinkler,  which  allows  water
to  flow  from  the  targeted  sprinkler.

The  deluge  valve  in  a  deluge  system  is
tripped  by  the  actuation  of  a  detection
system, which introduces water into the
piping  system.

Dry pipe sprinklers are pressurized with
air,  which  is  released  upon  actuation
of  the  sprinkler.  There  is  a  delay  in  the
discharge of water while the pressurized
air  escapes  from  the  system,  upon
which water flows into the piping system

WATER BASED FIRE SYSTEMS

Water based suppression systems utilize the inexpensive and readily available medium of water to discharge
onto flames through a normally ﬁxed piping system. There are 4 main types of Water based Protection
Systems. The hazard / risk to be protected will determine the most suitable type of system you need.

A wet pipe sprinkler system is ﬁxed ﬁre protection
using piping ﬁlled with pressurized water supplied
from a dependable source (either municipal
or connected to a ﬁre pump). Heat sensitive
automatic sprinklers spaced and located in
accordance with recognized installation standards
are used to detect a ﬁre.
